Seminar on ICT in ESD in Shimla and Chandigarh

Under the flagship project Climate EduXchange, two state-level seminars were held in Shimla and Chandigarh on 2-3 and 4-5 November respectively. Ms Rajwant Sandhu, Chief Secretary, Government of Himachal Pradesh was the Chief Guest for the seminar in Shimla. Ms Sandhu in her deliberations mentioned the role and importance of Information Communication Technology in uplifting the weaker sections of society. In Chandigarh, senior dignitaries Ms Surina Rajan, Finance Commissioner and Principal Secretary (Education), Directorate of School Education, Panchkula, Haryana, Mr Raj Mishra, Regional Director, Commonwealth Youth Programme, Commonwealth Secretariat, Chandigarh, and Mr Prabhakar Pakalpati, Site Director, DELL International Services, Mohali were present.

Ms Ranjana Saikia in her address delved on the fact that environment issues and practicing environment education is now becoming an integral part of our school curriculum and academicians and researchers all around the world believe that ICT is a potent tool to enhance the capacity in terms of perception, understanding and communication. The project Climate EduXchange is now being implemented in over 400 schools and has impacted over 1,50,000 students and 1,000 teachers. Various modes and tools have been used for dissemination and sharing of knowledge, this programme will provide a paradigm shift in the education system at the national and state level on Information Communication and Technology and its efficacy in education and sustainable development.

There were various sessions through the seminar that focused on the concepts and role of ICT and ESD, looking at ICT in the formal as well as non-formal and informal sectors, showcasing importance and relevance of ICT in projects and programmes undertaken by governments, corporates and NGOs and showcasing Government, bilateral, multilateral initiatives and programmes wherein ICT has helped in creating awareness, changing mindsets, influencing lives and providing access. Both TERI and DELL aim to conduct several seminars in different states, including Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh apart from Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh. The state level seminars will culminate into a Mega - National level event which will be organized in the month of March 2012 at New Delhi. The mega national level seminar will showcase the best practices and case studies from the states where the state level seminars were conducted. The seminars were attended by school teachers, college and university students, NGOs, and government officials.
